The craft

Shaped by hand, tool by tool

Each piece begins as a rough-sawn block. It's turned on the lathe or roughed out by hand, then carved with chisels and gouges passed down through generations of Kallakurichi artisans — every curl of the peacock's tail, every fold of a deity's robe cut freehand, without moulds.

It's slow work. A detailed wall panel can take an artisan several days of steady carving before it ever reaches the sanding and finishing stage.

Finishing options

From bare varnished wood to full temple colour work, chosen to suit where the piece will live.

Natural Varnished Finish

Clear coats that protect the wood while letting its natural grain and colour show through.

Wax Finish

A soft hand-buffed sheen that deepens the wood tone with a warm, matte-satin surface.

Multi-Colour Finish

Traditional hand-painted detailing in temple colour palettes, picking out figures and motifs.

Gold Finish

Gilded highlights on crowns, jewellery and borders for an opulent, temple-inspired look.
